Helping people with intellectual disability stay healthy

This project is about helping people with intellectual disability stay healthy.

It focuses on heart health and problems like:

  • being overweight
  • smoking/vaping
  • not doing enough exercise
  • eating unhealthy food
  • side effects of mental health medications
  • sleep

We are updating a health resource (a guide or tool) that was first made in 2016. The new resource uses a simple traffic light system:

🔴 Red = Needs help
🟡 Yellow = Recommendations
🟢 Green = Target

What is the goal?

  • To make a clear and simple tool for health professionals.
  • To help them notice when someone with intellectual disability needs help with their health.
  • To give good ideas for what to do next.
  • To make sure people with intellectual disability get the same quality of care as everyone else.

Project team

Julian Trollor, Emma Suzuki, Rory Keyes and Rebecca Koncz from the 3DN are on the project team. Health experts and researchers, people with lived experience of disability, and carers and support workers are also on the team.

The project is funded by NSW Health and supported by Mindgardens and other partners.
