Models of healthcare for people with intellectual disability

A model of care is the way health services are delivered to their patients.

We are looking at what people think are the best ways health services can care for people with intellectual disability. We are also looking at what resources are available to help healthcare services become better at providing healthcare for people with intellectual disabilities.

We know that people with intellectual disability don’t always get the best healthcare they could. We want to look at how healthcare is delivered to people with intellectual disability – like where and how they receive healthcare. We also want to look at how health services improve their care for people with intellectual disability.

By looking at these aspects of care, we can find out if what we are currently doing works for people with intellectual disability and what healthcare services can or are doing to improve care for them.

There are several main outcomes for this project. We will:

  • Write a report about the models of care used in intellectual disability health in Australia

  • Collect resources that tell health services how to improve how they care for people with intellectual disability and put them on a Knowledge Exchange Hub

  • Create resources to help people be inclusive when providing healthcare for people with intellectual disability
