The National Roadmap for improving the health of people with intellectual disability
The National Roadmap for improving healthcare for people with intellectual disability is the Australian Government’s plan to make intellectual disability health care better.
We call it the Roadmap for short.
The goals of the Roadmap are
More people with intellectual disability using free preventative health services
- This includes having a health check every year, breast and cervical screenings
Different types of health care working better together
- Doctors, nurses, dentists, specialists and other health care workers working together.
- Health care services sharing information
Different Government services working better together
- Health care, education, housing
- Healthcare workers understanding how the NDIS works
Healthcare workers are supported to give good care
- Health care workers have the right skills and training to work with people with intellectual disability and treat people with intellectual disability the same as everyone else.
People with intellectual disability have better oral health.
- Making it easier for people with intellectual disability to find a dentist that meets their needs
- Dentists have the right skills, tools and training to give good care to people with intellectual disability including children
- People with intellectual disability have information and resources to help them to take good care of their teeth and mouth
Information about people with intellectual and health care
- Collecting better information about how people with intellectual disability use health care
- Using this information to make health care in Australia better for people with intellectual disability
Good health care and information in emergencies
This includes getting:
- the right information
- COVID-19 tests and vaccinations
- things to keep people safe, like masks and gloves
- mental health support
- other health care and supports
