National Health Reform Agreement

We are talking with Federal and State Health Ministers to make sure people with intellectual disability are included in the National Health Reform Agreement (NHRA). The NHRA is the main national agreement which says how health and hospitals will be managed and funded for the next five years.

A new Agreement is being made to start in mid-2026 so the Centre is telling the government now what things it should include.

We are asking for the following 5 things to be in the Agreement:

  1. Acknowledgement that people with intellectual disability face major health inequities compared to other Australians.

  2. Health funding systems that support the extra time needed for health care workers to provide proper care to people with intellectual disability.

  3. A way that people with intellectual disability can identify their own disability and health needs in all health settings without having to repeat them every time they go to a different service.

  4. Reasonable adjustments and NDIS supports to make sure people with intellectual disability get enough support in hospital.

  5. Support for training of health and disability workers on intellectual disability health.

These recommendations are consistent with the recommendations of the Disability Royal Commission and the Mid-Term Review of the National Health Reform Agreement.

The Centre looks forward to meeting with the Commonwealth and all the States and Territories and getting their commitment on these 5 recommendations. Sign up to our news and we will keep you updated on our progress.
