New podcast highlights need for better healthcare in intellectual disability

The Centre of Excellence in Intellectual Disability Health has launched Excellence in Practice: Voices for Better Care - a new podcast exploring how to improve healthcare for Australians with intellectual disability.

Hosted by Ricky Kremer and Raylene Griffiths, who have lived experience, the podcast supports healthcare professionals who want to improve their practice when working with people with intellectual disability.

Ricky and Raylene’s engaging discussions will also appeal to anyone interested in disability rights, inclusive care, or health equity.

In each episode, they speak with experts, healthcare professionals and people with lived experience - sharing real stories and practical advice on how we can deliver better care.

Each episode explores a key issue in healthcare, highlighting what good care looks like - and what needs to change.

Centre Director, Scientia Professor Julian Trollor AM, said the podcast is an innovative and accessible way to share insights and drive improvement.

“People with intellectual disability often face different health challenges, but too often they don’t get the care that meets their needs,” Professor Trollor said.

“At the moment, people with intellectual disability die, on average, 27 years earlier than other Australians - not from their disability, but from potentially preventable conditions.

“We know that better care starts with better understanding. By combining lived experience with insight, this podcast will support more inclusive, respectful and effective care.

“We’re excited to launch this podcast and give people - especially healthcare professionals - real insight into the key issues in healthcare for people with intellectual disability.”
