Primary health networks play an important role in Australia’s health system. But we think these networks can be improved so that people with intellectual disability get better services and improved health.
We have told the government what we think. Read our submission (not in Easy Read)
What are primary health networks?
Primary health networks are an important part of Australia’s health system.
Primary health networks are local organisations that improve health care in their area. They help make different health services work together better.
The Disability Royal Commission said that primary health networks need to improve their services for people with intellectual disability.
Our recommendations
In our submission we make 5 recommendations. Recommendations include:
- Health pathways: primary health networks should work with hospitals to develop health pathways for services outside of hospitals.
- Annual health assessments: primary health networks could improve how often annual health assessments are used for people with intellectual disability.
- Mental health assessments: primary health networks should include basic mental health assessments and treatment for people with intellectual disability. They should also report on how they are delivering this.
We hope the government listens to our recommendations so that health systems can be improved for people with intellectual disability.
