Submission to Improve the Health and Mental Health of Autistic People

Submission to the Draft National Roadmap to Improve the Health and Mental Health of Autistic People

The Centre has made a submission to the Australian government inquiry into making a National Roadmap to Improve the Health and Mental Health of Autistic people. We said that while there are many links between intellectual disability and autism, two separate but related Roadmaps is the best way to meet the needs of both groups.

We also said that it was important that education and training for health professionals include separate capability frameworks for working with people with intellectual disability and Autistic people.

We recommended that for people with both autism and intellectual disability:

  1. They should be given more attention in the Autism Roadmap. This should include looking at their increased health and support needs.

  2. Their needs should also be considered in the National Roadmap for Improving the Health of People with Intellectual Disability.

  3. There needs to be more research into health of Autistic people with intellectual disability.
